Survival is a basic human instinct. But, given that we are accustomed to so many commodities, how prepared are we really to face the wild and survive on our own? While they may not be the most accurate representation of survival scenarios, survival adventure games are a great way to test your survival skills in a fantasy survival scenario. I had been discussing the topic with a friend of mine, as we were both brainstorming on the best way to survive a zombie invasion. My friend ended up sending me a list of supposedly the best 10 survival games, and of course, I had to check them out!
I found quite a few games that I liked. So, I decided to pick out my top 3 favorites and review them. Here are my top picks.
Ocean Is Home: Survival Island – Rating: 4.2, Downloads: 10M+
One game I really liked is Ocean Is Home. It basically sets the stage so you can find your own way on a deserted island. It reminded me a bit of Minecraft but without the retro style graphics. Instead, Ocean is Home’s island world is highly realistic with detailed and beautiful 3D renderings. I liked how you start off with just the basic tools you need to craft wood, and then you build tools and weapons to build your own shelter and survive.
While I still have a lot to discover in the game, I must confess that I’ve become quite addicted to it as there is always an item or upgrade that I want to make to my house. I also really enjoy exploring the island and hunting for food.
The only thing I am not a fan of is that if you die while exploring, you may lose some of the tools and materials that you had with you. So, only take with you what you need for hunting or mining, and make sure to leave the valuable goods stored in your home!
Pros: Deserted island theme, realistic graphics, craft tools, and weapons, build a home, hunt.
Cons: Can lose materials if you die.
Overall: Survive in a deserted island by building your own shelter, building weapons and hunting for food, although be prepared to defend yourself as you may lose some materials if you are killed.
Jurassic Survival Island: Dinosaurs & Craft – Rating: 4.4, Downloads: 5M+
Another survival adventure game I really liked is Jurassic Survival Island. I have always loved dinosaurs, so I guess I had a soft spot for this game from the start. But, in all honesty, I found that the developers truly did a great job at combining a prehistoric dinosaur-filled world with a hunting and crafting system that felt well-balanced and was fun to play.
I particularly liked how you can even tame some dinosaurs and keep them as pets or ride them to travel through the world faster. I also must give credit to the developers who paid great attention to detail when creating the dinosaurs, as they look highly realistic.
One thing to keep in mind is that you will see ads occasionally. Thankfully, they are short and not that frequent. And, considering that you can play through the entire game without paying a cent, it is not bad at all.
Pros: Prehistoric theme, hunt or tame dinosaurs, highly realistic, crafting system, well-balanced.
Cons: Occasional ads.
Overall: Test your survival skills in a prehistoric world as you hunt or tame dinosaurs, although you will see adds occasionally.
Day R Survival – Rating: 4.6, Downloads: 10M+
I couldn’t complete my survival adventure list without a zombie survival game. My last pick, Day R Survival, takes place in a post-apocalyptic world that is filled with radiation along with zombies and monsters that are hunting for live flesh. I like how you need to consider many variables when fighting for your survival, including enemies in your area, radiation levels, deadly diseases, food, shelter, and more.
I particularly liked the online multiplayer mode as I found it really fun to explore the world with my friends as we joined forces to beat more powerful enemies.
My only word of advice is to pick your shelter spot really carefully. I made the mistake of building a shelter in an area I thought was safe, but then I realized that the radiation was killing me faster than I could repair my chemistry suit. So, make sure to find a spot with lower radiation levels before you start building your shelter.
Pros: Post-apocalyptic theme, online multiplayer, hunt for food, fight zombies, monsters, radiation, and diseases.
Cons: Too much radiation in some areas.
Overall: Fight zombies, monsters and deadly diseases to survive in a post-apocalyptic world, although you might want to stay clear from areas that have unsustainably high radiation levels.
Those are my top 3 favorite survival adventure games. My personal favorite is Jurassic Survival Island, although I must say that I have been addicted to Ocean Is Home lately. While they all involve crafting and hunting for survival, the themes are completely different, so it comes down to your preferred game style. Good luck surviving!
