Tellakos | After the introduction of the e bikes, the riders have been more eager to try out this latest technology which is far better than the regular cycles. After all, there is no need to pedal or lose control over the bike’s speed road. E bikes run on batteries which is the main source of power. These batteries supply static charge which is then converted into mechanical power by the pedal-assist system and the motor together. Apart from this, an e bike will have a motor, a controller system, assisting systems, and so on.
While buying the e bikes, a rider must know about the several components being used in different models. After all, the performance and other features of the bike largely depend on these individual parts and their efficient functioning.
Major parts of the e bikes that can easily be identified:
The first part which we will discuss here are the batteries present in the bikes. These batteries are the main source of power, and hence, they serve a major role. Batteries used in the e bikes are of four major types:
- Lead-acid batteries: These are one of the oldest and cheapest forms where lead and acid are the two main chemicals present for releasing energy. Even though these are cheap, the efficiency of the SLA batteries is quite questionable, including the longevity.
- Nickel-cadmium batteries: Since the SLA batteries failed to provide the desired output, manufacturers started to use nickel -batteries which have high performance and efficiency. However, nickel is very expensive and cadmium is a huge threat to the environment.
- Nickel-metal batteries: Another modernized version of the Ni-Ca battery is the nickel-metal batteries. Here, an alloy of nickel with other metals is used to prevent pollution in the environment.
- Lithium-ion Polymer batteries: The latest and the most used battery type of the Li-ion batteries. Not only these are lightweight but also highly durable and long-lasting.
The main function of the motor is to convert the incoming electrical energy into mechanical energy that will drive the e bikes. In these e bikes, four major types of motors are used which generate the required amount of power to the rear or front wheels. These are:
- Mid driver
- Geared hub motor
- Direct drive hub motor
- Friction motor
Since the motors used in the e bikes are brushless, a direct connection can’t be established between the motor arms and the battery. This is where the controller comes in. In an e bike, the two major roles of a controller arrangement are:
- As the battery generates a DC voltage, the controller converts it into three-phase alternating current so that on feeding to the motor, the rotor section of the e bike motor can spin and generate the necessary mechanical power.
- The controller also acts as a voltage regulator as it continuously monitors and adjusts the voltage levels at the input of the motor from the battery.
In almost 90% of the e bikes, one can find E-brake sensors which accept input from the brake levers and send the same information to the sensor present in the motor. This way, the motor can come to an immediate stop, without producing further mechanical output, the moment the brakes are applied.
Several types of e bikes are available in the market for you to choose from. But, at the time of choosing, make sure the components present are appropriate and per your commute plans. You need to do some research online and choose the perfect e bikes for you and your family and friends. A wrong choice of bike parts will not only put your performance in jeopardy but also result in huge financial loss and wasted effort.
